Arched windows – what do you need to know?

Kategorie

Windows are an extremely important part of a building’s architecture. In addition to functionality, we expect windows to be the perfect finishing touch to our home and to decorate the facade. In more original designs, windows often determine the style and character of a building. Of the various shapes, arched windows seem to be the most impressive and decorative.

Where are arched windows suitable?

Where are these models most suitable? They are often found in old tenement houses, especially in attics. They will certainly fit in perfectly with the architecture of a house styled as an old palace or a country house. Lovers of modern style can also successfully sneak arched windows into their design. Usually, one window is chosen for this purpose, usually the most visible, the largest or the one located in an interesting place. It looks perfect at the top of the house, where it harmonises very well with the soaring roof. It is worth noting that arched windows are both those based on a rectangle, ending at the top with an arch, and those completely round, which also appear in modern designs.

Arched windows – technological limitations

In order for an arched window to be not only beautiful but also functional, its position, dimensions and division into sashes must be carefully considered, and then very precise measurements must be taken and the sashes must be installed without error. There is no room for error here! If you decide on arched windows, you should ask yourself whether it should be an openable window or not. In the case of round windows, non-openable models are most often chosen and treated as a kind of lighting. However, if you want to be able to open the window, it is worth considering a system that allows the window to rotate around a vertical or horizontal axis. The way in which arched windows open also depends on the location of the window in the building. This can be a problem, especially in the attic, as the slants and beams there significantly limit the free space. The main limitation in the production of arched windows is the ability to bend individual elements, which is why it sometimes happens that a project is impossible to realise for technological reasons. Fortunately, standardised section bending radii are already widely used and PVC is perfectly suited for this purpose. What should be kept in mind?

What is worth remembering, however, is the function of windows, which can be difficult to achieve in the case of arched models. I am talking about the tilt function of the window. There are already specialised fittings that are able to enable this, but it is worth remembering that the curved part of an arched window is much less reinforced and stable. Therefore, its resistance to wind force is lower and, consequently, it is easier for the window frames to deform. This is especially important in the case of completely round windows, which, due to their construction, have the least amount of reinforcement. Rectangular windows with an arch at the top should not cause any major problems in this respect.
