External window sill made of steel or aluminium?

Kategorie

The main task of external window sills, also known as drip mouldings, is to protect the facade against water collecting in the area below the window and possible water dripping down the wall. Therefore, it is important to ensure that they are installed properly, guaranteeing that they will protect the wall and drain the water properly. When buying a window sill, we must make sure that it is made of a durable and weather-resistant material.

External window sills, an elegant window finish

It is rather difficult to imagine any window without an external window sill. It is not only a functional element, but also complements the window joinery, emphasising its style. To blend in well with the window design and the building façade, it must be carefully selected. The important features of this element include both the colour and the material it is made of. This will have a decisive impact on durability and weather resistance. External window sills are elements that are installed for many years, so they should retain their aesthetic appearance and functionality for a long time, regardless of changes in weather, temperature or rainfall intensity.

The weight and installation method of the windowsill must be adapted to the type of wall. We can install any type of windowsill on a single-layer and three-layer wall without restrictions. However, a double-layer wall also has a layer of insulation on the outside, on which natural and artificial stone windowsills cannot be supported.

Metal windowsills

Various types of metal are the materials that work best in outdoor conditions, in both low and high temperatures and high humidity. That is why steel and aluminium window sills are a frequent choice for investors. Both successfully blend into the modern architecture of any building. In addition, they are highly resistant to corrosion thanks to the use of special protection methods and carefully selected alloys. An aluminium window sill is a more expensive option, but also more durable.

Steel window sills, unlike aluminium ones, are less resistant to mechanical damage, deformation or scratching. They also require more careful protection against contact with water and air. However, their low price makes them very popular. Steel and aluminium window sills are available in many designs and colours.

Aluminium window sills

Aluminium window sills available on the market are made using one of two techniques. These are cold-formed or pressed sheets. They are recommended for installation under aluminium, PVC or wooden windows. In addition to their high-quality appearance, they are characterised by their durability. Their increased resistance to mechanical damage is due to the use of a much thicker aluminium sheet. Moreover, they are almost completely resistant to many chemicals, stains, moisture, cleaning agents and corrosion. These properties mean that aluminium window sills do not require additional protection, even when used as external window sills. Aluminium models are more expensive than their steel counterparts, but their quality makes up for this disadvantage.

Steel window sills

Steel window sills, whether painted or veneered, are, like aluminium ones, non-flammable, mechanically durable and resistant to chemicals. Steel window sills are made of powder-coated galvanised steel, which protects them from corrosion. This method allows them to be given any colour. Any edges that have been cut during installation should be treated with anti-corrosion paint. Another method of giving the window sills the right colour is to cover them with veneer.
