How do you recognise a good garage door?

Garages are now almost standard features of buildings, and we value them for their functionality and convenience. At the same time, garage doors are another element of the exterior of the house that we have to pay attention to and match with the doors, windows and facade. Fortunately, manufacturers now offer a wide range of doors, both in terms of technology and colour.

– Up-and-over doors – the door opens upwards and takes up space under the ceiling, but when opened, the lower part of the door extends out of the garage. Therefore, it is not recommended for narrow driveways. In addition, it has worse thermal and acoustic performance than a sectional door.

– Sectional doors – open upwards or sideways and do not extend beyond the garage, therefore taking up very little space. The door surface is divided into individual sections, which are usually insulated and are perfect for a heated garage.

– Roller doors – they are similar to roller blinds in terms of technology because, like them, they are hidden in a special cassette inside the garage. They take up the least space but are also the most expensive. They are only available with an electric drive.

– Swing gates – the oldest type of gate consisting of one or two leaves.

They are installed in the classic way and it is not always possible to install an electric drive. They are the most troublesome to use, especially in heavy snowfall. They also take up the most space in front of the garage.

Which is the right garage door?

Specifications and features of garage doors are key issues to consider when choosing the perfect model for us. Colour and design should be chosen only in the next step because, although important, they do not determine the comfort of use of the door. First of all, it is worth looking at the material the door is made of, the solidity of the construction and the reliability of the electric drive mechanism. These aspects will determine the comfort of everyday use.

If we have an insulated garage, we should pay special attention to the profile thickness and filling. In this case, sectional doors are the best choice, as they provide the highest degree of thermal and acoustic protection. It is also worth mentioning the energy efficiency of the drive and the noise level it makes during operation. A gate that opens loudly will be very annoying for both us and our neighbours. A good gate is also one that is professionally installed and has a manufacturer’s warranty for both the whole gate and its individual components.

Single or double gate?

Both solutions have their pros and cons and it is difficult to decide which one is better. One thing is for sure: with a double door, manual opening is not an option, only automatic opening, which is a great advantage, especially in bad weather. In addition, it is much easier to manoeuvre a car into a garage if the entrance is wider. Unfortunately, in the case of a heated garage, the heat loss resulting from opening a double gate can be too much. The same applies to the energy consumption of the automatic mechanism. A single gate means less heat and energy loss, but also more difficult entry into the garage and a narrower field for manoeuvring the car.
