Traditional balcony doors operate on the principle of a window. The difference is that its dimensions allow for free passage through it. This is the cheapest solution, commonly installed on balconies, as well as in the case of exits to the terrace. Nowadays, in newly built houses, it is increasingly common to move away from installing doors with this solution in favor of sliding terrace doors.
Types of sliding terrace doors
The offer of window joinery manufacturers includes several types of sliding terrace doors. Operating all available types of terrace doors is simple and convenient. Due to the use of different systems, each of them has slightly different advantages and offers different possibilities. Ultimately, the choice of a specific option depends on subjective preferences, as well as individual needs.
Lift-and-slide doors
Sliding lift-and-slide terrace doors (HST) are opened by sliding horizontally. Their main advantage is the possibility of constructing large, elegant glazing, but importantly, despite its large size, the system is easy to operate. This allows for convenient opening and closing. The doors operate on the basis of an innovative lift-and-slide opening system, which gently lifts the sash moving on special rollers. It is also possible to block the partially retracted movable sash for ventilation. Their main advantages are elegant appearance, convenient closing and opening, and a low (flush with the floor) threshold. Optionally, the doors can be operated automatically using a remote control.
HKS Tilt-and-Slide Terrace Doors
They are opened by sliding horizontally, similarly to HST. The sash can also be tilted from the upper edge, which makes it easier to ventilate rooms. HKS terrace doors are cheaper than HST. Unfortunately, operating the system requires a bit more force than in the case of HST, and there is no way to flush the threshold.

PAS sliding terrace doors
The method of opening PAS type doors is similar to HKS and HST by sliding horizontally. An important feature of this solution is the ability to “set aside” the movable leaf around the entire perimeter by a few millimeters, which makes it easier to air the room – even on a rainy or windy day. Similarly to HKS type doors, we cannot use a low threshold here either.
Materials from which sliding terrace doors are made
Whether the doors are made of PVC, wood or aluminum is important primarily from the point of view of aesthetics and due to the maximum permissible dimensions of the structure. Sliding doors of the largest dimensions (even up to 12,000 mm wide – while maintaining appropriate divisions) can be made of aluminum. Both PVC and wood offer fewer possibilities in this respect. Aluminum is also a very durable material, resistant to weather conditions and characterized by a modern look. Wood, on the other hand, offers a classic, elegant look and timeless class of products made from it. PVC, on the other hand, is a material that is available at a competitive price.
An interesting solution is the option of wooden-aluminum doors. They combine the advantages of both materials. On the outside, the profile is made of aluminum, which increases the durability of the door and gives a more modern character to the building. On the inside, wood was used, elegant and able to warm up the look of the rooms.
