Why does the window not close?

Kategorie

A window that won’t close properly can have several causes. It can be a danger for unwanted visitors, so it’s not a problem to be taken lightly. A specialist is not always necessary to solve the problem – there are some things we can do ourselves to avoid an unpleasant situation.

How to react to a window that does not close?

If something is wrong with a window, don’t just grab a hammer and nails, but first try to figure out if you did everything correctly. Sometimes a gentle movement is enough to make the window work again.

An ambiguous handle position is a common problem, especially with two-way tilt windows. Simply place the window against the frame and move the handle to a clear position, which will make the window work properly again. If the handle gets stuck, press the spring element, which is automatically pressed when the window is closed.

What causes problems with closing the window?

Modern windows are designed to be resistant to operating errors. However, it is still possible to open them incorrectly, which is to be expected. The most common problem is when the sash hangs on one hinge. It is important that the sash does not remain in this position for a long time, as this can cause damage. The best solution in this situation is to press the window at the top hinge and then press the handle rotation lock. It is worth asking someone to help you with this. Keeping the lock in a vertical position and pressing the sash against the frame, turn the handle to the closed window position. If done correctly, the window should close.

Another problem with a window not closing properly can be dirt in the window gaps – rubbish, sand or dust, sometimes even larger pieces of debris or pebbles. In such situations, do not force the window to close, as this can damage the seal or even the entire frame. Vacuum the fittings and gaps thoroughly, sweep away the sand and wipe the frames with a damp cloth.

An additional window maintenance activity that prevents the window from not closing properly is the adjustment of the window fittings. Poorly adjusted fittings can contribute to windows not closing properly and the formation of micro-cracks through which moisture can effectively penetrate. All fittings should be checked at least once a year, and all fixing screws should be tightened if necessary. Movable parts should be lubricated with grease recommended by the manufacturer.

Which windows might have trouble closing?

Windows currently available on the market do not warp or shrink due to heat and sunlight. This is prevented by a special design and maintenance with substances that protect against moisture. Old wooden windows can be problematic, especially if they have not been properly maintained. In this case, the solution may be to simply replace the windows.

Sometimes, windows made of resistant materials, it can be damaged within the frame due to improper use. Such defects require specialised service repair, which is expensive. To avoid this, no additional load may be applied to the window sash. The stresses and loads are calculated so that the frames can only support the sash and nothing else. The sash should also not be pressed against the reveal. Another mistake is to insert objects between the sash and the frame. All these incorrect behaviours lead to distortions and damages that are difficult to eliminate on your own.
